This body of work was inspired by Phulkari embroideries I encountered during a 2014 research trip to India, supported by an Artists International Development Fund Grant from Arts Council England and the British Council. As an International Artist-in-Residence at the Sanskriti Foundation, I visited artisans and textile collections in Delhi and Rajasthan. I loved seeing Phulkari embroideries from Punjab in the collection of the Delhi Craft Museum. The diagonal grids, diamond patterns and brilliant marigolds and reds that distinguish these embroideries inspired this series of paintings on Khadi paper and on panel.
